Cintas de amarre and lashing straps for the Spanish market

A Spanish buyer asks for a cinta de amarre or a carraca, and expects the label to carry LC in daN and the marking to Spanish wording. We build to EN 12195-2 for carriers who are checked against RD 563/2017 and the stowage duty in the traffic regulations.

First, the words

The words your buyer uses

Half of the back-and-forth in an export order is vocabulary. Here is what the same product is called in this market, and which of those words changes what we print on the label.

TermWhat it meansWhy it decides the order
cinta de amarrelashing strapthe term in the enquiry and on the invoice
cinchawider restraint strapused for heavier restraint and trailer work
carraca / trinquetethe ratchet tensionerboth words are used; carraca is the common one

estibastowagehow the load is arranged on the vehicle, before it is secured
CMUmaximum working loadthe lifting figure — not the one a lashing strap is bought on
How Spain secures a load

A duty in the traffic regulation, standards in the inspection annex

Article 14 of the Reglamento General de Circulación (RD 1428/2003) requires that the load and its accessories are arranged and, where necessary, secured so that they cannot drag, fall, move dangerously or compromise the stability of the vehicle. The technical standards are then listed in Annex III of RD 563/2017, which governs technical inspection of commercial vehicles in Spain.

  • Annex III of RD 563/2017 names the standards to be applied: EN 12195-1 for the calculation of lashing forces, EN 12640 for the lashing points, EN 12642 for the strength of the body, and EN 12195-2 for synthetic webbing lashings — with EN 12195-3 and -4 for chains and wire rope.
  • That makes the calculation verifiable in Spain rather than a matter of opinion: the load weight, the friction and the lashing angles produce a number, and the number has to be covered by rated straps.
  • The DGT has made the position on responsibility clear — the duty for correct stowage falls on the loading company unless the transport contract gives it to the logistics operator. The buyer of the strap is very often the party carrying the exposure.
  • The label carries LC in daN and the standard number, and the strap is bought on the LC. CMU (the maximum working load) belongs to lifting slings, not to lashing straps, and mixing the two is the marking error we correct most often.
  • Non-compliance is treated as a serious infringement and can mean a fine from €200 upwards, plus removal of the load where it creates a danger. A roadside check is where an unreadable label becomes an expensive morning.

Marking

What goes on the label

Site and roadside inspections fail on labels more often than on the product. Every strap and sling we ship for this market can be marked with the full set:

  • Manufacturer name and country of origin
  • EN 12195-2 as the standard number
  • LC in daN, plus STF and SHF
  • Length, material (PES) and the elongation at LC
  • Spanish-language warning and care text, and a batch number traceable to the test report
Documentation

What travels with the shipment

  • Declaration of conformity to EN 12195-2, or EN 1492-1 / -2 for slings
  • Batch pull-test report linked to the goods, so the calculation can be evidenced
  • TÜV GS certificates and the TÜV CERT DIN EN ISO 9001 certificate
  • A written LC statement per line for your customer's stowage plan
  • Invoice, packing list and certificate of origin for Spanish customs
