Cintas de amarração and ratchet straps for the Brazilian market

Brazil rewrote cargo lashing in 2017 and began enforcing it in 2018. Two of its requirements are unlike anything in Europe or North America: ropes are banned as a lashing device, and the strength test is total breaking strength of at least twice the weight of the load — not a working load limit. We build cintas de amarracao and cintas catraca to that rule, with the documents to show it.

First, the words

The words your buyer uses

Half of the back-and-forth in an export order is vocabulary. Here is what the same product is called in this market, and which of those words changes what we print on the label.

The resolution that banned the rope

Resolução CONTRAN 552 sets the minimum safety requirements for carrying cargo on Brazilian roads. It was published in 2017 and has been enforced since the adjustment period closed, and it has since been amended by later CONTRAN resolutions.

  • Ropes are prohibited as a lashing device. Rope may only be used to fasten the tarpaulin. Lashing has to be textile straps, steel cable or chain.
  • The strength test is different. The lashing devices have to have a total breaking strength of at least twice the weight of the load. That is breaking strength, not working load limit — a different number from the 50% WLL rule used in the US and Canada, and it has to be demonstrable on the documents.
  • Lashing to the wooden bodywork is prohibited. Anchor points have to be on the metal structure or the chassis, which puts as much weight on the hardware as on the strap.
  • The tensioner has to be reachable and re-tensionable on the road, and the driver is responsible for re-checking. That is why a catraca is specified rather than a cam buckle on anything heavy.
  • Additional devices are expected where the load needs them — containment bars, rails, meshes, nets, chocks, friction matting, separators, blockers and protectors — along with enough rated anchor points.
  • Brazilian buyers file a laudo técnico with their own customer, so the breaking-strength statement per line is part of the product, not an afterthought.

Marking

What goes on the label

Site and roadside inspections fail on labels more often than on the product. Every strap and sling we ship for this market can be marked with the full set:

  • Fabricante e país de origem — manufacturer and country of origin
  • Length and maximum load in direct traction
  • Date of manufacture and a traceable batch number
  • The ABNT NBR standard number your customer specifies
  • Portuguese-language instructions — Brazilian inspectors and buyers read the tag in Portuguese
Documentation

What travels with the shipment

  • Declaração de conformidade stating the total breaking strength per line, so the 2× rule can be demonstrated on paper
  • Laudo tecnico / batch pull-test report linked to the goods
  • TÜV CERT DIN EN ISO 9001 quality management certificate
  • Invoice, packing list and certificate of origin for Brazilian customs
  • Portuguese labelling and documents on request

Working with us

How an order is placed

01

Manda a carga

Send the load weight and the strap length. We come back with the total breaking strength per line, sized so the 2× rule is covered with margin rather than exactly met.

02

Amostra e etiqueta

A free sample with the Portuguese label and the ABNT NBR number your customer wants printed, so the marking is settled before the container.

03

Produção e documentos

Batch production with pull testing, then the declaracao de conformidade and the export document set your importer needs.
